Emily’s Gift of Selflessness
I was in California, along the West Coast. My sleigh was gliding through the crisp night air. I took a few seconds to marvel at the beauty above. The sky was clear, with barely a cloud in sight, and every star was visible on this Christmas night. The moon cast a glow over the rooftops and illuminates the streets below.
I made my way to a little home nestled in a cul-de-sac, where a young girl named Emily was eagerly awaiting my arrival. She was now 11 years old, and I’d watched her year after year, always seeking ways to spread joy and kindness. Emily had a heart dedicated to helping others, and I’ve seen her countless acts of caring and sharing.
With a sack full of presents, I carefully descended the chimney.
And As I stepped into the living room, my eyes were drawn to this beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Twinkling colored lights and shimmering ornaments on its branches and the tree was topped with a glowing white angel. Just as I began placing gifts beneath the tree, a soft voice called out from the dark kitchen.
“Santa?” Emily’s voice was filled with anticipation and I could tell her heart was racing.
Turning, I saw her emerge from her hiding spot. Her cheeks flushed and her eyes shining with determination. In that moment, I knew this was no ordinary visit.
“Hello, Emily,” I said while setting down my sack of presents. “What brings you out of bed on this magical night?”
Emily took a deep breath and stepped forward, her voice trembling but resolute. She had a secret she’d been waiting to share, A Wish that she hoped would make a difference.
“Santa, I don’t need any presents this year,” she began. “I want all my gifts to go to my friend Addison. She’s had a hard year. Her family lost everything in a house fire this year, and I want to help to make their Christmas special.”
My heart swells with pride everytime I hear a selfless request. Despite her young age, Emily possesses a spirit of compassion that was truly remarkable.
“Emily, that is a wonderful idea,” I said, “I know your kindness will surely bring joy to Addison and her family during this difficult time.”
With a twinkle in my eye, I reached into my sack and pulled out something special for Emily—a small token of appreciation for her generous heart.
“I’m going to make sure to take special care of Addison this year, I promise.” “But know this: Addison is lucky to have a friend like you. Sometimes, when life gets tough, the best gift we can give is friendship—and you’re already doing that. I know you Emily, your kindness can move mountains.”
Emily gave me a look, and then paused… she understood… “Thanks Santa” as she ran off to bed.
As I prepared to leave, I took one more look at their awesome Christmas tree. This girl’s selflessness reminded me that the true magic of Christmas lies not in the presents we receive, but in the love and kindness we share other people.
The night sky continued to glisten above, I whispered a blessing for Emily and for everyone like her—those who strive to make the world a more beautiful place.
In so many ways, the world needs more of little Emily’s spirit. The world needs more kindness and more givers.
“Alright, Rudolph, we’re off to the next house.”
